Disability Housing That Works !

For someone living with Spina Bifida, the daily challenges often revolve around mobility and accessibility — things many of us take for granted. For Shanon, one of our newest tenants at AccessAccom, moving into Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) has been a truly life-changing experience.
Before settling into his new AccessAccom SDA home, Shanon was living in a standard rental with his then-partner. The space wasn’t wheelchair accessible and the bathroom, in particular, was difficult to navigate. The lack of accessibility made everyday life unnecessarily challenging.
The decision to look for a more suitable home came from a desire to live independently while remaining close to his support network. Having spent most of his life in the area, Shanon wanted to stay connected to the friends and community that matter most to him. That sense of belonging was just as important as the physical accessibility of his home.
With a background in Support Coordination under the NDIS, Shanon was already familiar with the SDA framework. However, navigating the system firsthand was a different experience altogether. “The process was stressful,” he recalled, “particularly when it came to collecting and submitting all the necessary evidence. In the end, the decision is made by someone who doesn’t know me or truly understand how important it is for me to live in SDA.”
When it came to choosing a new home, Shanon had clear priorities: an accessible bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen — key areas that directly impact day-to-day independence and comfort. While searching in Sydney, he came across Bayview in the Sutherland Shire and instantly felt a connection. “My heart was set on it,” he said. “I didn’t even bother looking anywhere else.”
Now happily settled in, Shanon couldn’t be more pleased. “The location couldn’t be better. I absolutely love where I live.” With medical services and grocery stores located in the shopping centre just downstairs — and the beach only ten minutes away — everything he needs is within easy reach. This is Shanon’s first time living in an accessible home, and the difference has been profound.

Automated features throughout the apartment have made daily tasks more manageable, easing the strain of routines that were previously difficult or required assistance. The thoughtful design of the apartment has restored a sense of freedom and autonomy.
The move has had a powerful impact on Shanon’s quality of life. Tasks that once demanded extra effort are now stress-free and his overall sense of independence has never been stronger. “Living in an AccessAccom apartment has been an absolute game changer,” he shared.
Since moving to Bayview, Shanon has shown leadership and a strong sense of community spirit. He has joined the AccessAccom Tenant Advisory Group (TAG), where he contributes his lived experience to help shape better outcomes for all tenants. In addition to this, Shanon — along fellow resident Zac — has taken the lead in creating a Facebook group for AccessAccom tenants from across all projects. The group offers an online space where residents can connect, share advice, ask questions and support one another – helping to foster a sense of community that goes beyond physical location.
To others who are considering SDA housing, Shanon offers this advice: “Absolutely apply. Gather as much evidence as you can to show why SDA is essential for your daily life. The process may not be easy, but the outcome is worth it.”
Reflecting on his journey, Shanon is full of appreciation. “I am extremely impressed with what AccessAccom has delivered and the continued support from all their staff.”
This is more than just a new apartment for Shanon — it’s a new chapter filled with possibility, independence and community. At AccessAccom, we’re proud to be a part of Shanon’s journey.
