Sydney Festival is back 8 – 25 January 2026 marking its 50th edition under new Festival Director Kris Nelson, and bringing a rich mix of theatre, music, dance, visual-arts, outdoor spectacles and community events across Sydney.
For our AccessAccom community, people with disabilities, families and carers this is a golden opportunity to experience Sydney’s cultural heartbeat in a festival committed to accessibility and inclusion.
The Festival offers a formal Access & Inclusion statement and Inclusion Plan signalling a genuine, festival-wide commitment to welcoming all visitors, regardless of mobility, hearing or sensory needs.
If you have questions or specific needs (mobility, sensory, hearing, companion support, etc.) the Festival encourages direct contact via phone or email. They want to work with you to ensure a smooth and comfy experience.
Support for Hearing, Mobility & Sensory Needs
The Festival’s access guidance historically covers hearing-accessible performances, mobility-friendly venues, sensory considerations, and support for companion-card holders or carers.
Venues used by Sydney Festival are spread across the city, including theatres, halls, waterfront precincts and public spaces — giving a broad choice of settings that often already have accessibility infrastructure (ramps, lifts, accessible toilets, step-free access).
Something for Every Ability & Interest
From immersive theatre and dance productions to outdoor concerts, visual-art installations, family-friendly shows, and free public events, the Festival offers many pathways for inclusion:
- There are free & affordable events as well as ticketed shows — lowering financial barriers to attendance for many.
- The program’s variety (music, dance, theatre, installations, talks, art) means visitors can pick what suits best their energy, mood, and comfort.
- With its 2026 theme embracing “generations” and intergenerational stories, there’s a sense the Festival aims to include people of all ages and mobility levels.
- True inclusivity: With awareness of diverse access needs, the Festival works toward ensuring a dignified and enjoyable experience for people of all abilities.
- Diverse event options: Whether you prefer seated theatre, relaxed installations, outdoor concerts or family-friendly shows there’s flexibility to match your comfort level, mobility needs, and interests.
- Social connection and cultural enrichment: The Festival offers a chance for people with disability, carers, families and friends to gather, enjoy art, and participate in Sydney’s cultural life.
- Affordability and accessibility: Free or low-cost events, clear access support, and a city-wide spread of venues make the festival accessible for a wide audience.
